We begin our first day with a drive out to the Elephant Preserve. We spend the morning playing with the elephants in the river, riding elephants through the jungle, and feeding the elephants fruit and snacks afterward. We will learn about the history of the elephant preserve and the important work that they are doing to preserve local wildlife in the midst of expanding development.
We return to Pekanbaru for lunch and then go to explore some of the local artistry through Riau batik and local weaving. We return to your hotel afterward and the rest of the evening is open. Nighttime options include visiting one of the local malls or heading out to one of Pekanbaru’s nighttime food destinations for more local flavor.
Day two begins with a drive out to Candi Muara Takus, a local Buddhist temple dating back to the 11th or 12th century. Along the way you will see some of the village life along the way plus some of the lakes and hills outside of the city. After a guided tour at the temple, we will return to the city for Nasi Padang, the traditional cuisine of the Minangkabau people.
The afternoon schedule includes a choice- you can enjoy some of the local coffee shops in the city or head back out to a local village to spend some time on the river and explore the village with a local guide.
The evening program is open, with the same options as the night before.
Our final day begins at the local market as you hunt down some souvenirs and keepsakes and experience the traditional markets of Indonesia. Afterward we head to the Grand Mosque to see the beauty and hear about the religious history of the area.
We conclude our tour program after lunch with an appreciation gift and wrap up celebration.
