City of Artistry
Yogyakarta
Yogyakarta, commonly called Jogja, is the capital city of the last remaining monarchy in Indonesia, the Special Region of Yogyakarta. A center of Javanese culture and arts, Jogja is known for its well-preserved history, including two ancient temple compounds, and vibrant artistic community. Nestled in between mountains (including an active volcano) and beautiful beaches, Jogja has a little bit of everything. As a well-known college town it also benefits from very affordable prices and a cosmopolitan feel.
One of our favorite resorts provides a great base of operation for forays into the city and adventuring into the mountains. Art lovers will find silversmiths, batik producers, and amazing art studios. Foodies will find delightful European and Indonesian foods as well as a growing coffee community. Treasure hunters will spend hours in antique shops and hidden gems throughout Jogja’s most famous shopping street, Malioboro.
For the adventurous traveler, tubing down the river and through caves may be more your speed. A jeep trek up to Mount Merapi is a great family outing, and many more options exist for those who want to stretch their legs and seek out secluded waterfalls and quiet mountaintops. The southern coastline provides beautiful beaches stretching as far as the eye can see.
We consider Jogja to be one of the best locations for family getaways and one of the most cost-effective vacation spots that we have visited. We would love to help you plan your Jogja adventure!
